Decentralized finance (DeFi) is a technological and philosophical movement that attempts to offer alternative solutions to prevailing problems. It’s made possible because of cutting edge advances in open source blockchain technology and is rapidly progressing because of the growing need for decentralized transaction networks. It’s a topic worth studying.
This course highlights the technologies and macroeconomic importance of the innovation taking place within DeFi and provides actionable perspectives and guides on how to use it.
DeFi as a Solution
Citizens of wealthy countries may perceive DeFi as a solution looking for a problem because their countries have functioning financial industries but they don’t realize that that is a privilege. In many countries, DeFi is serving as the last resort for people to utilize the 3 functions of money — a unit of account, a store of value, and a medium of exchange.
In these regions, banks, lenders, brokers, and government entities may not be trustworthy. What DeFi attempts to do, and what is impossible in traditional finance (TradFi) is remove the need for the middle man and facilitate transactions using decentralized public blockchains.
Start with Crypto Fundamentals
If you haven’t already, it’s widely recommended to complete Solflare’s Crypto Fundamentals course before you start this one. DeFi 101 is of course a 101 course so anyone can take it but those with a stronger foundation of understanding blockchain concepts will excel.

So what’s DeFi 101 going to cover?
DeFi 101 will be a general overview of DeFi’s context and technology (yield farming, synthetics, DEXes, airdrops, on-chain leverage, etc), as well as more bird’s eye view arguments for why DeFi makes sense in many parts of the world.

Self Guided Learning
Solflare’s courses are self guided meaning you can finish them on your own time. There will be dozens of resources hyperlinked within the chapters and you’re encouraged to read up on those. DeFi is a global movement thats happening at all times of the day and is consistently innovating so its not easy to keep up with everything across the many blockchains and business sectors affected by it.
This course is an attempt to help you find your footing in the world of DeFi to the point where you can point out fact from fiction and see the forest through the trees.
Critical observation and self reflection is a necessity for any industry and DeFi in particular. In order to do that, you need to be informed. Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll have a high level understanding of what DeFi, blockchains, and what crypto is trying to do as well as what technology is out there for you to use right now.

Start Your DeFi Journey
